Hair Hacks Every Girl Should Know

Hair Tips & TricksLuxy Hair8 Comments

Hair hacks are my lifesavers - they are fast, easy and make a significant difference in the way my hair looks and feels. I compiled some of my favorite hair hacks into a video, because I know you guys will love and appreciate them as much as I do.

I've got a lot more hair hacks in store, let me know if you like these and I'll be happy to make another hair hack video for you guys.

Make sure to Like this video if you'd like to see more hair hacks, and also SHARE it with your friends. They will love you for it.

Much Love,

1. Dry Ends

Who knew hand cream could work so well on hair?! For dry ends, try scrunching hand cream into the ends of your hair. This will help add moisture and shine when you're on the go and don't have the right products with you. The ingredients in many hand creams are similar to those in hair creams, and will help refresh and rejuvenate your hair!

2. Baby Hairs/Fly-Aways

Baby hairs are a good thing - it means your hair is growing, yay! But they can be a bit of a pain when styling your hair. To tame these little hairs, all you need is an old toothbrush and some hairspray. Spray the toothbrush with some hair spray and gently brush those fly-aways with the toothbrush. This will help ensure you don’t spray too much hairspray in your hair, which can cause your hair to become crunchy and dirty.

3. Added Volume

A little extra volume never hurt anyone, right? For added volume, try blow drying your roots with your head upside down. This will help lift the roots of your hair up, and create extra body and volume!

4. Longer & Thicker Braids

Clip-in hair extensions are the go-to method for adding thickness and length to any hairstyle - especially braids! Adding a few hair extension wefts to your hair can really change the look of your hairstyle. We loving adding our Luxies to any braid for volume, length and drama!

5. Bobby Pin Trick

So, it turns out we've been using bobby pins the wrong way (what?!). Did you know that the wavy part of the pin is actually supposed to be facing down when pinned into your hair? When you slide it in this way, you'll see that it locks your hair much better, and it won't slide out when you're doing any kind of hairstyle.

By the way, here are some super fun ways to use your bobby pins - check it out!

6. Avoid the Dreaded Hair Elastic Crease

Nothing is more frustrating than having a hair tie leave a kink in your hair just after being styled - we've all been there. This hair hack is the perfect way to protect your hair from those kinks. First off - ditch the hair tie! Grab two sections of your hair (from left and right), cross them under the bulk of the hair, bring them back over and tie them, and then bring them under once again and slide some bobby pins in to secure them. It may sound intimidating but we promise - it's so much easier than it sounds!

Do you use any of these tricks? What are some of YOUR hair hacks? Comment on this blog post and let us know!

How To Clean Your Hair Tools (& Why You Should Do It)

Hair Care & Advice, Hair Tips & TricksLuxy Hair3 Comments

You want your hair tools to work wonders on your hair, right?

Well, just like with anything else, in order for that to happen...they need to be taken care of. And by that, we mean a nice, thorough, regular cleaning. Be honest with yourself for a sec...

When was the last time you've cleaned your hair brush? What about your blow dryer and your curling or flat irons (whaat, those need cleaning too?). Yes my dear, they do. Product buildup on your hot tools can burn hair and cause split ends.

In this blog post we’ll show you the easiest ways to take care of your hair tools and accessories. Not only will they last longer, they will also work better and ensure your hair is GOALS. Let's get started.

Cleaning Hairbrushes and Combs

Think about what gets stuck in your hair brush (other than hair, of course): dust, hair spray, oils from your scalp, other product residue, germs, other random particles flying around… Now think about what happens when you don’t clean it for weeks! Do you really want to brush all that onto your freshly washed hair? We don’t think so.

Step 1: Take any long, thin tool (rat tail comb or a pair of closed scissors), slide it under all the stuck hair in the brush, and gently tug upwards until it’s loosened out of the bristles. Of course, if there isn’t that much hair, you can easily pull out whatever is left with your hand, after each time you brush your hair.

Step 2: Now onto the washing. Fill up the sink with warm water and splash some cleansing shampoo. Either let it soak for a bit, or take an old toothbrush and gently get rid of the buildup at the base of the brush or comb.

Step 3: Done! All clean. Either let the hair brushes air dry, or use a blow drier for a faster result. Some brushes may take longer to dry, so perhaps it's a good idea to leave them to dry overnight.

Cleaning Curlers and Flat Irons

Don't let the sticky product buildup on your curlers and flat irons burn your hair and cause split ends! To keep your hot tools in great condition, it's important to clean them well in order to get rid of that residue.

Step 1: Make sure they are unplugged before starting. Moisten a cloth with water and rub over the surfaces over and over again to get rid of as much buildup as possible. If water doesn’t work, add a little rubbing alcohol (or a professional iron cleaner, if you’d like). Dry the hot tool entirely before using.

Step 2: Enjoy the smooth gliding of your straightener and amazing bouncy curls from your curler.

Tip #1: the product buildup comes off easier when the hot tools are warm (not hot). To achieve this, plug the tool in for a few seconds and remember to unplug before starting to clean.

Tip #2: Remember to never submerge your curlers and straighteners in water - this is both dangerous and will ruin your iron.

Cleaning Your Blow Dryer

Take your blow drier and take a look at the back where the vent is. See that? That’s lint...and dirt. Most likely completely covering the filter. Unless yours is brand new or recently cleaned, a clogged up blow dryer is something a lot of us are guilty of. All this built up dirt and lint blocks the ventilation a blow dryer needs to work properly and safely.

Step 1: Remove the back cover (it usually easily twists off - if not, consult your instructions manual).

Step 2: Take out the filter and clean it out with some small tools (Q-tips, toothbrush, toothpick, tweezers, etc.). Then, rinse with warm water and let it dry completely.

Step 3: While that’s drying, give your blow dryer some love and rub down the nozzle and body with a damp cloth to clean any build up of hair products.

Enjoy the maximum airflow of your next blow-out! Feels just like new.

Cleaning Hair Accessories

Remember your headbands, hair ties, scrunchies, and hair clips! They also have hair product buildup, as well as potential sweat and pollution from the outside. Once in a while, throw them all in the sink with warm water and a few drops of shampoo. Gently rub each accessory and then dry them on a towel.

Remember, our beautiful friends…The better we care for our hair tools, the better they care for our hair ;)

How often do you clean your hair tools?

Luxy Hair Team

Q: How often do I need to clean my hair tools?

A: This depends on how often you use them, and how much product you use. Try cleaning your brushes out after every use and washing them once a month. Clean your hot tools at least once a month.

Q: My blowdryer doesn’t have a filter/doesn’t look like that?

A: There are so many different blow dryer constructions, but chances are high that they can be cleaned. Please refer to the instructions manual on how you can clean the vent/filter.

Q: What do I do if I use boar bristle brushes?

A: You clean them just the same! You can also “comb” them to help you get the hair out. They may take a little longer to dry, but the results will be worth it.

Heatless Magazine Waves

Hair Tutorials, Hair Tips & TricksLuxy Hair9 Comments

Are you ready to see a magic trick? Today I'm going to show you how to create beautiful, soft, mermaid waves using pages from your magazine. That's right... I'm not kidding. It really works and it looks absolutely beautiful. This technique was inspired by my friend Kat, who apparently has been doing this on her hair since she was a little girl. How did I not know about this trick?!
I tried this on my hair, while I had my Luxies on (I wore my Chestnut Ombre set) and it was very easy to curl both. Oh, and the best part of course is that these curls are heatless, hence no damage to your hair or the extensions. Enough talk, just watch the video now to learn the trick. Remember to share it with your girls, because sharing is caring and who doesn't love beautiful wavy hair? :)

As always, I love hearing your feedback, so leave me a comment down below and share your recreations on Insta with #magazinewaves

5 Tips On How To Get Amazing Post-Workout Hair

Hair Tips & TricksLuxy Hair14 Comments

Let’s admit it…there’s been a few times when we’ve skipped a workout to keep our hair looking great for a little while longer, am I right ladies?

Of course, taking a shower and washing your hair after a nice workout or a sweaty yoga class is the ideal thing. But what if you work out daily? And what if showering just isn’t an option on that day or you’ve already washed your hair too many times that week? (dry hair alert!)

Well, don’t let that stop you from being active on your lunch break or first thing in the morning before work, because today we will share our 5 favourite tips on how to get your hair looking great after a workout.

Shortcut to Blowout

Chances are, your scalp is somewhat...well, drenched in sweat. This is where we fake a blowout by not washing your hair beforehand. Simply take a blow drier, flip your hair, and quickly try to dry the moisture out of your roots. This will do two things: 1) Dry out the sweat (obviously) and 2) Add some volume to the roots to give it back that bounce. Step number two is to use your favourite dry shampoo at the roots and thoroughly work it into the scalp to give it that freshened up look.

What? Oh this? I was going for this look.

In case you really, really worked it out (you go girl!) and dry shampoo just won’t do the trick, pull your hair back into a slicked-back bun and use your favourite smoothing product (like a holding gel or oil) to tame flyaways. Pretend that’s the look you were going for and noone will even know... hehe. Sleek!

What about my curls?

If you have wavy or curly hair, use your favourite sulfate-free and alcohol-free product such as a styling cream to twist and scrunch the hair to help it maintain the curl. PS. Ever thought of leaving in conditioner for during the workout? Perfect opportunity to hydrate those curls.

Make life easier, think ahead!

Did you know that you can strategically do your hair before your workout in order to achieve awesome post-workout hair results? For example, if you put your hair in high ponytail or a high bun, you will get tons of volume after taking it out.

Another great idea is to braid your hair. Not only is it a secure hairstyle for even high-intensity workouts, but the humidity (or the sweat) will contribute to beautiful loose mermaid waves.

If you like to wear headbands to hold your hair back, opt for thick soft bands instead of the tight thin ones, because those can leave a stubborn indent right at the top of your head, which is hard to get rid of without a shower.

Regardless of the hairstyle, make sure the hair is away from your face and your neck. The less it is roaming free, the cleaner your hair will be afterwards.

Air dry

If your hair isn’t prone to getting too frizzy, then you can indulge in a quick rinse and let your hair air dry. For a nice touch, twist the front parts of your hair back and pin. This looks super cute on damp hair, and also once it dries.

There you go, our favourite “nobody will even believe you were getting a sweat on just moments before this” hair fixes :) Now there are less excuses to forego your workouts! Let us know how these tips work out for you, and if you have any other suggestions that you think we should try. How do you fix up your hair after your workout?

5 Reasons to Get Ombre Hair

Hair Care & Advice, Hair Tips & TricksLuxy Hair8 Comments

Well...whoever thought Ombre was just a fad - was clearly mistaken! Because up until this day, Ombre is still going strong. And tell you what, ladies, we think it’s here to stay.

If you don’t love Ombre as much as we do (yet!), after reading this article, you just might be convinced. Here are our top 5 reasons to get Ombre Hair, especially for the warmer months:

1. It’s Fun & Stylish

Solid hair shade is great and all, but we say two is more fun than one! You can either go with a very subtle transition between the shades or a more drastic Ombre look, or even contrast two very different bright shades of your choice - whatever you like. Besides, Ombre is very trendy and makes the hair stand out more. It also looks great worn both straight and curly, which is an awesome bonus.

2. Hairstyles Look Better

If the two selected shades complement each other well, the Ombre effect will give more life and dimension to your hair. Especially when creating hairstyles, the Ombre portion will make the details stand out a lot more and make the hairstyle so much prettier - just like this one or this one. Even simple braids look so great with the colour transition! Take a look here or here to see what we’re talking about…see? Told you.

3. Low Maintenance

Firstly, Ombre is a very easy way to grow out your roots. Or, if your hair is dark and you’ve been wanting to go lighter, a big drawback can be - yes, you guessed it - the dark roots that constantly grow out!

Instead of colouring all of your hair and having to maintain your roots by constant touch-ups, the beauty of Ombre is that you don’t have to worry about your roots AT ALL. Let’em grow out all you want, and your hair will still look fantastic.

4. Easy to Transition From

Have you ever wanted a change, but you were uncertain if it would suit you? Or dying all your hair seemed like too much of a commitment? We feel you girl. Why Ombre is great in this regard, is because it’s literally just half the hair that you would be trying it out on, which is a baby step. And, to look on the bright side, if you’re no longer feeling it, you can always slowly trim it off as your hair grows out.

5. Get Ombre Without Colouring Your Hair

Best part, is that there is a way to get the Ombre look without having to colour your hair - clip-in Luxy Hair Extensions! Easily achieve the Ombre look in under 5 minutes by clipping your Luxies in :) Choose between the Ombre Chestnut shade for a more subtle blend, or the Ombre Blonde for a more defined Ombre look.

There you go, the top five reasons why we love the Ombre look. Do you love Ombre as much as we do? Would you, or have you ever tried it? What is your favourite hairstyle to wear with Ombre? Share you comments below, we always love hearing from you :)

7 Ways To Change Up Your Look

Hair Tips & TricksLuxy Hair1 Comment

Do you ever feel like doing something different with your hair, but don’t want to do anything drastic to it - like dye or cut it?

Most of us have a look and hairstyle that we tend to stick with on a daily basis. It’s easy to fall into the same routine - it’s convenient, familiar, fast...the same. Sometimes it’s a great idea to step out of your hair-comfort-zone and try something new.

Here are some easy ways you can change up your look, with absolutely no damage to your hair or any drastic changes.

1. Girly Girl

If your style usually doesn’t scream 'girly-girl’, why not dress up and throw in some flowers or ribbons into your hair for a change? These small accessories in your hair will create a feminine, playful, and lovely look :)

2. Part With Your Regular Hair Part

Although you think it may be the most flattering, or maybe the hair just naturally falls this way, changing your hair part can make a huge difference and totally reinvent your look! Parting your hair differently will add volume and dimension at the roots which will frame your face in a totally new way.

Hint: If your classic hair part is stubborn and keeps overpowering your new part, don’t worry. Spray some water or styling spray and blow dry the hair to train it to stay in the new direction.

3. Pull Hair Back With a Headband

This one goes out to all you girls who love hiding behind your bangs - try it out! You can use a headband, or simply tie your hair back in a high ponytail or bun. There is something so light and charming about opening up your beautiful features. And no, nobody else is as paranoid about your baby hairs as you are (but you can totally try keeping those at bay by applying some hairspray and using a toothbrush and blow drier to sleek them back).

4. Try A Faux Bob

Cutting all your hair off into a bob is definitely a huge commitment. So why not go from long to short with a Faux Bob? Get ready to respond to a bunch of  remarks like “Omg! Did you cut your hair?! It looks so nice!” ;) Learn how to do a Faux Bob herehere or here.

5. Classy

Classic look is timeless. Try opting for elegant looks which are perfectly combed and executed. To achieve a classy feel, try a dramatic side part and a low bun or chignon. Add some pearls, some lipstick, and voilà! Find tutorials here and here.

6. Edgy

You know what’s fun? Stepping outside of your usual style once in a while. If you’re not edgy/rocker-chic on the daily, throw on a leather jacket and try rocking this funky look for a day. You can find some tutorials here and here

7. Get Ombre (Without Dying Your Hair)

Ombre Hair Extensions are the perfect way to play around with the colour of your hair with absolutely zero damage to your own hair. Enjoy the best of both worlds and instantly get the Ombre Look by using some Ombre hair extensions. Our faves are here and here

While some of these may not look like something you would normally prefer, surely there are some styles that do appeal to you that you've never tried. We encourage you to experiment with different styles and have fun with it!

If you do, please share your experiences, and any other tips or tricks that work for changing up your look without damaging your hair :)

How To Make Your Curls Last Longer: 5 Tips

Hair Tips & TricksLuxy Hair13 Comments

Oh how we love those beautiful, flawless, bouncy curls. But you know what’s even better? Beautiful, flawless, bouncy curls that last all day.

Today we’re sharing our favourite tips and tricks with you in order to make your curls last longer!

1. Cool down those curls

One of the most effective tricks is to let the curl cool down and set before letting it go. Take each fresh curl (still keeping the curl shape) and secure it with a clip or a bobby pin. How does this work? Well, as you wrap your hair around the curling iron, heat is transferred onto the hair strands, which is what makes them change their shape. Therefore, once your pinned curl is cooled down, it will allow the cuticle to close and set in place, making it last for a much longer period of time. Learn how to do this technique from this video.

Hint: If you don’t have time to wait 10-15 minutes for the curls to set, pin them all to your scalp and use your blow drier to blow cold air on them from a distance. Ever wondered what that 'cool' button was there for? ;)

2. Use the right products

Help your curls! Apply styling products to your hair, which will help hold the curls in longer. Depending what works with your hair, apply mousse prior to drying your hair, or simply spray hairspray before and after curling. All this is after applying heat protectant, of course - always remember the heat protectant first!

Hint: Don’t hold the hairspray too close to your hair. You want to spray mist onto it, and wait a few moments for it to dry prior to applying heat.

3. Invest in good hot tools

For years, you may think that your hair is 'stick straight' and that ‘your curls will fall apart in 20 minutes anyway’. You will think that as long as you use cheap, drugstore brand curlers. Only when you switch to better quality, higher-end tools, will you realize that the problem isn’t in your hair - it’s in the iron! Yes, they may be more expensive, however, they damage your hair less, they heat up better (so you will apply heat for a shorter period of time), and good quality irons will last you a very long time. We enjoy Cortex-4-in-1 curling wands and the NuMe 5-in-1 Lustrum set.

4. Use the right barrel size

Barrel size is actually pretty important. It’s easy to think that a bigger barrel is what will give you those sexy Victoria Secret Curls. However, we find that most of the time, a smaller barrel will do the magic. Depending on your hair, of course, try using a 1” or 1.5" barrel, and see what difference it can make! Not only will the curls look better, but they will also last longer.

5. Still doesn’t curl?

Well, my beautiful friend, this is a sign that your hair is screaming SOS. Overly damaged hair (including split ends) doesn’t curl well. Period. It’s time to give your hair some love and get a trim! If you are scared to cut your hair and missed our post about split ends, check it out here

If you’re doing all of the above things right, but just aren't sure of the techniques available on how to curl your hair - don’t worry :) It takes some practice. Good thing we have lots of curling tutorials for you, our lovelies! Here are some of our faves:

Never let anyone dull your curls ;)

Your Ultimate Hairbrush Guide

Hair Care & Advice, Hair Tips & TricksLuxy Hair18 Comments

Hello lovelies,

Choosing the right hairbrush and using it correctly can make all the difference in achieving your perfect hair look. There are so many different kinds of brushes on the market... but do you know which one to use for what? Are you using the brush that is right for you?

Here’s a quick guide on the most popular and widely used hairbrushes:

Paddle Brush

Paddle brushes are flat with a wide surface area, making them great for straightening and smoothing your hair. For an effective sleek straightening job, use a paddle brush before flat ironing your hair or drying your hair for a smooth finish.

Round Brush

Round brushes are ideal for creating that volume and body in your hair. This is the brush you want to use when you are blow-drying your hair. Round brushes come in different sizes - choose a smaller barrel for shorter hair or to create tighter curls (video tutorial here) and choose a larger barrel for that ultimate straight yet volumizing blowout (video tutorial here). Remember, the bigger the barrel, the straighter the look.

Teasing Brush

Speaking for itself, this brush is perfect for teasing your hair and creating texture to support your lovely updos. Bonus points for having a point-ended handle, which can be used for sectioning the hair perfectly. Tip: Try to avoid this brush if your hair is very fine or fragile.

Wide tooth comb

This is the best tool to use to brush wet hair. As you may know, wet hair is sometimes so hard to brush. Yet wet hair is most prone to breakage, which is why it is so important to gently comb your hair starting from the bottom and working your way up.

Detangling Brush

These are specifically designed to painlessly and easily remove tangles and knots in your hair. This brush minimizes breakage and damage during detangling. Most of them can be used on both wet and dry hair.

Rat Tail Comb

This is a specially-shaped comb which can be used to section the hair perfectly with precision or to create the perfect part. This comb can also be used for backcombing your hair.

Remember, finding products that are right for your hair type can make a world of a difference. Try these different kinds of brushes out and see how you can transform your hair by using different techniques with them!

What is your go-to hairbrush? Do you have any preferred faves? Please comment below to share with us :) We always love hearing from you.

6 Easy Ways to Fix a Bad Hair Day

Hair Tips & TricksLuxy Hair4 Comments

We’ve all had days when our hair just does not cooperate the way we’d like :) Whether it’s bed hair, second day hair, or a simply bad hair day - here are 6 simple and quick tips on how to fix it!

1. Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo absorbs excess oils and adds a volumizing texture to your hair. If you don’t have dry shampoo handy, try this simple trick: take a teaspoon of baby powder and gently massage it into your scalp at the roots. This will also absorb excess oils and make your hair appear fresher.

Tip: use little by little to make sure not to use too much, or otherwise it will be noticeable.

2. Braids, braids, braids

We just love braids. Not only will they cover up that second day hair, but they also look so much better on second or third day hair. For some ideas on what kinds of braids you can try out, click here.

Left to right: Chunky Reverse Fishtail braid, Chain braid, Pull-Through braid, Three Strand Fisthail braid.

3. Tease your roots

For flat hair, backcombing the roots will instantly lift the hair and give it a lively, fuller look. Learn how to backcomb your hair here

4. Embrace the frizz

Your hair doesn’t need to be perfectly smooth at all times. Why not befriend your frizz by lightly braiding or putting your hair in a boho-chic looking bun, and rock it with confidence? Just for your reference, tips on how to tame frizzy hair here

5. Wash half your hair

Okay, this one may sound a little strange - but for a lot of ladies like us, the process of washing, conditioning, and drying the hair can take a long time. When you’re in a rush, take the front part of your hair and wash that section only (maybe even in the sink). If you have bangs, wash the bangs. This will give an illusion that you have freshly washed hair and take the attention away from what you’re trying to conceal ;)

6. Rock that cute hat or headband

This one’s a given. For girls, it’s probably what they’re made for anyway! Try rocking a cute hat with a side braid, or tease your hair at the crown and put on a thick headband. Ta-da… what bad hair day?

And finally…it’s only a bad hair day if we allow it to be one. Decide that you are beautiful no matter what, stay confident and smile lots. If you do not attract attention to your less than perfect hair on that day, chances are - nobody will even notice a thing about it ;)

What are some tips and tricks that you use to fix a bad hair day? Please comment below, we’d love to hear from you!

For many of us, bobby pins are a must hair accessory. They are perfect and simple way to secure a bun, pin up our bangs, or hide the hair away from the face.

Today, we want to share some fun and creative ways to use your simple bobby pins to make an ordinary hairstyle - extraordinary!

First things first… did you know?

The right way to use a bobby pin is with the wavy side down.

Make super cute designs with your bobby pins to add some fun.

  • Try out this lovely looking triangle by pinning two bobby pins at opposite angles, and securing them with one at the bottom.
  • Or perhaps a snowflake?
  • How about this funky arrow-like design? To achieve this bold look, pin a bobby pin at an angle, and then simply slide another one in at an opposite angle.
  • Criss Cross time! Create Xs along the side of your head to achieve this cool look.
  • Why not add a hashtag ;) Perfect for securing a waterfall braid! #bobbypinfun
  • Multiply them, line them up! Instead of using one bobby pin, try putting at least 4-5 or more for this distinguished look!

Tips & Tricks:

  • Use light-coloured bobby pins for darker hair, and dark-coloured bobby pins for blonde hair in order for your creations to stand out more.
  • DYI idea: Why not use some nail polish to get some funky coloured bobby pins?
  • You can also add other fun details like glitter, pearls, jewels, or flowers onto your pins for sparkly accents.

Be sure to share your own tips and tricks with us, as well as your fun bobby pin recreations on our Facebook page, or by tagging #luxyhair on instagram :) We are so excited to see!
